But first, what is ERW? ERW means "electric resistance welded. ERW pipes are made using a flat steel that is rolled into the shape of a tube. A seam is then created by using a proprietary welding process to weld the edges of the silicone together. This seam is where the two ends of the steel meet. In contrast, seamless pipes are manufactured to a different process. Instead, it begins as a block of solid steel that is heated and then rolled into the tube shape (unsullied by welds). This is precisely why seamless pipes do not have the seam at all. The manufacturing process makes a difference and adds characteristics of the individual pipe type.

So, what are the advantages and disadvantages of each kind of pipe? The cheaper production is another positive side of ERW pipes. This is useful for people who have limited resources to work on a project. Since they are welded together, the joint where both ends of the pipe meet is generally robust. Yet, a potential consistency flaw is the seam with which the welding occurs at. That means, if it gets under too much pressure, there is the possibility of cracking or breaking.

The Pros and Cons of Using ERW Pipe versus Seamless Pipe

Seamless pipes do not consist of any seams, which means these are much stronger and good in withstanding high pressure compared to welded. They are also commonly the go-to option for projects that need to maintain leak-free integrity as a top priority. If you use pipes in a system of water, you want to check leaks for example. In contrast, seamless pipes require a longer production time with the use of high-quality materials, so they tend to be more expensive than ERW pipes.

The second difference falls with respect to their thickness- ERW pipes are thinner than seamless pipe. Welded ERW pipes have a consistent thickness over the entire body of the pipe. This makes them easier to connect with other pipes when you are constructing or repairing something. You want ensure the pipes fit well together to avoid issues. However, the wall thickness of seamless pipes can vary along the length of the pipe. This means that they may not cut as cleanly, which makes it more difficult to fit them with some other pipes.
